EXPECTED OUTCOMES

This symposium will enable the learners to accurately diagnose atrial fibrillation (AF) and evaluate new-onset AF. They will be equipped with the latest updates from the ESC 2024 Guidelines, comprehend the AF-CARE pathway, and make informed decisions on anticoagulation therapy, including the use of NOACs, when to switch to NOACs. Additionally, they will gain insights into the role of anticoagulation in low-risk patients, and the importance of early anticoagulation in reducing the risk of venous thromboembolism and alleviating symptom burden in AF patients.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) - Risk factors for AF & Classification of AF, clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria, roles of ECG and Holter monitoring.
  • New updates from ESC 2024 Guidelines in the AF-CARE pathway
  • The AF-CARE pathway, comorbidity and risk factor management, stroke and thromboembolism prevention, symptom reduction through rate and rhythm control, and dynamic patient evaluation and reassessment.
  • Selecting appropriate oral anticoagulation, antiplatelet, and combination therapy based on clinical scenarios and bleeding risk
  • Understand when to switch to NOAC Myths and challenges around anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation Role of anticoagulation in low-risk patients with AF and its impact on stroke and cognitive function
  • Role of anticoagulation in low-risk patients with AF and its impact on stroke and cognitive function
  • Discuss the risk of venous thromboembolism in patients with AF and the importance of early anticoagulation in reducing the symptom burden in these patients
